A Diverse and Inclusive Conference
From speakers to participants, the organization has sought to ensure diversity and plurality of voices
More than just a pretty design, the logo of The Amazon and New Economies International Conference, developed by the visual artist from Pará, Kambô, represents the richness and diversity existing in the Amazon region. The objective of promoting an inclusive and diverse event was not restricted to the logo. Representatives of forest peoples, civil society, academia, public and private sectors have participated in the organization of the Conference since the beginning.
Of the 180 speakers confirmed for the event’s 28 panels, 33% are leaders and representatives of non-governmental organizations; 28% are from the federal government; 24% from the private sector; 9% from state and municipal governments; 8% of traditional peoples and local representatives; and 6% from academia. In addition to Brazil, the Conference will feature speakers from Canada, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, South Korea and Colombia.
The director-president of the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), Raul Jungmann explains that this scenario is the result of the commitment of the organizers to build an event with the people of the forest, and not for the people of the forest. “The global agenda is based on the environmental issue and we need to unlock the strengthening of new economies, exploring all our potential for sustainable socioeconomic development. But this will only happen if we have the direct and permanent involvement of people who know and live in the Amazon”.
Of the total number of speakers at the Conference, 35% are women and, among them, there are outstanding leaders such as: Neidinha Suruí, activist at the Kanindé Ethno-environmental Defense Association; Izete dos Santos Costa, founder of Filhas do Combu Chocolates and Handmade Sweets; and Joanna Martins, CEO and Director of Operations at Manioca.
The organization of the Conference also prioritizes diversity in the selection process of the participants of the event to ensure that the most diverse social segments are represented, enriching the debates through the exchange of experiences and the plurality of ideas. With three weeks to go until the event, around 750 people have already registered.
